Art, and particularly visual arts, is a field of human activity which has always been open to influences, whether through a search for novelty or, more recently, through a desire for dialogue. This is especially true for certain works of contemporary art, for which the concern for social and civic involvement has become a defining trait. We wish to show what role the visual arts can play in the acceptance of otherness. We will briefly outline the journey of art which, from paradigm to paradigm, changes the relationship between the work, the artist, and the public, and will highlight the place of otherness in artistic production. An overview of the way in which the teaching of visual arts uses the field of art to promote inclusion will support the idea of the specific role that contemporary art has in this openness towards the Other.
