Best practices provide a solid underpinning in shaping a healthy, resilient, and adaptable economic dynamic. Good rules and sound practices can be prerequisites for harmonious and sustainable economic growth. Without them, the outcome can be bleak. In this article, we aim to examine the extent to which institutions support sustainable economic and social development at the European level, comparing how institutional indicators - such as government effectiveness, rule of law, control of corruption, government integrity, business freedom, judicial effectiveness, property rights, tax burden, government spending- affect macroeconomic indicators. On the other hand, by analyzing macro indicators related to public debt, budget expenditure, attraction of European funds, government investment, we will be able to weigh the correlation between institutions and the sustainability of the economy. In other words, the research questions are: (1) why do some EU governments manage to cope with multiple and recent challenges - starting with the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, armed conflicts in the neighborhood - and others do not? What unsustainable policies have led to a fragile economy? This research will underline that a combination of good institutions on the one hand and sustainable economic decisions and policies on the other is a strong underpinning to solving many of the problems facing society now and in the future. |
