In our urban experiences, we make the functional distinction between perception and image. The city can be perceived only in fragments, while the image is reconstructed in whole or in part, in personal memory and community memory. In these images, we find the true city, as its strength lies in such absences, structurally different in perception. Therefore, the city with its past, present and future, with individual or community projects and aspirations, with accomplishments and failures, with its myths, legends and stories is beyond the perceptual peak of the iceberg, in the depths, in the labyrinth, in the undergrounds of memory. The main and current problem is the need for continuous research of the deep city to update its values, to make them active vectors of life today and tomorrow. If we research the image of the city, looking for its significant stories, we discover, surprisingly, a lot of forgotten projects. By carefully analyzing them, we rediscover their vitality, we understand that they are necessary for today’s and tomorrow’s community. The dramatic problem we face is the disappearance of founders, visionaries and citizens. So that the restoration of the trivial unity of founder, creator, the citizen is fundamental for maintaining and perpetuating the health of a community. Otherwise, we are in imminent danger of collective Alzheimer’s.
