Background. In recent decades HIV has become a chronic manageable disease for patients who are adherent to therapy and have an undetectable viral load. In Canada and the United States, pharmacists are recognized as integral members of the HIV care team. Objective of the study. Establishing the role of the clinical pharmacist specialized in HIV pharmacotherapy. Material and Methods. A review of the literature and officially published data on studies of HIV clinical pharmacist interventions was conducted (SCOPUS, PubMed). Results. The analysis identified 6 key areas where the HIV clinical pharmacist can intervene to reduce drug resistance, avoid polypragmasia and drug interactions, increase adherence and monitor response to therapy with management of adverse reactions, reduce the cost of treatment in the health care system. Measurable impact being 75-90% for each segment. Conclusions. The present study provides evidence on the role of the clinical pharmacist as a specialist and member of the healthcare team within the healthcare system. Moreover, its input on these segments provides a timely tool for optimizing the coordination of resources in antiretroviral treatment. |
