Background. Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) occurs secondary to raised intracranial pressure (ICP) of unknown etiology. It can have huge complications such as permanent visual loss, therefore, these patients need to be diagnosed and treated in a timely manner. Objective of the study. We aim to evaluate the clinical features of patients presenting with IIH. Material and Methods. This is a retrospective case series with contemporaneous collection of data of three patients with clinical features suggestive of IIH. The patients were evaluated and diagnosed based on clinical examination and using the Dandy criteria. Results. All three patients were female and all were obese. The age range was 20 to 40 years. Clinical features of blurred vision, headache, and papilledema were relieved with oral acetazolamide and lumbar punctures. Conclusion. Most cases of IIH occur in young women who are obese, with systemic diseases, endocrine or metabolic disorders. Transient visual obscurations are due to bilateral swelling optic nerve, occurs in most patients, and lasts 1-5 seconds. Orthostatic changes induce these symptoms. Timely diagnosis and treatment is important to avoid irreversible blindness. |
