The key trend in fertility in Ukraine is the steady rise in the age of motherhood. The mean age at childbirth and the mean age at birth of first child have been gradually growing since the mid-90s. As compared to European countries postponement of childbearing is a relatively recent phenomenon in Ukraine. Despite the increase in the mean age at childbirth and the mean age at first birth Ukraine is still characterised by the lowest indicators among European countries. The influence of the trend of increasing maternal age on the formation of human potential has positive and negative manifestations. Women in advanced maternal age, as a rule, demonstrate great responsibility for children, better care, nursing, upbringing, taking care of health, education, development. Among the negative consequences of increasing maternal age the main problem is the unsatisfactory state of reproductive health women in advanced childbearing age and this can adversely affect the state of health of their children.
