In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic, with over 150 million cases registered and more than three million confirmed deaths until the end of April 2021. In this context, many national and international organizations and experts became very concerned with the direct and indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health. So far, there have been found moderate to severe depressive and anxiety symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), high or very high levels of stress, and also COVID-19-related suicides. Amongst the population at risk for suicidal thoughts and behavior (STB) were identified people with pre-existing psychiatric conditions which were worsened by the increased anxiety, sleep problems, and panic attacks. Overall, the effects of the restrictive measures (reduced social contacts and lockdown measures) overlapped with a direct influence on the suicidal behavior. Thus, it proved to be of overwhelming importance to firstly accurately assess the population’s mental health, and based on that to identify the vulnerable categories of individuals in order to develop tailored strategies to prevent the suicidal phenomenon associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
