The current problem and controversies in serological diagnosis of syphilis
The paper is devoted to current problems and controversies of syphilis diagnosis.
Serological tests for syphilis continue to play a major role in the diagnosis and management of
the disease and often are the only practical means of diagnosis. The problem acquires special
importance in consideration of the high rate of syphilis morbidity in the Republic of Moldova,
associated with an enhanced percentage of latent syphilis. Serologic tests provide only indirect
evidence of syphilis and may be reactive in the absence of clinical, historical or epidemiologic
evidence of syphilis, and are, therefore, very important for the laboratory diagnosis to be as
reliable as possible. The study’s results suggest that immunoblotting may be considered the most
specific treponemal test and must be used as an alternative to other tests - TPHA (Treponema
pallidum haemagglutination assay), EIA (Enzyme immunoassay)- when these tests give
equivocal or conflicting results. |
