The identity isn’t given; it is formed during the life experience. The identity could be confirmed or invalidate. This is done on the bases of the next three elements: the nation/clan the person proceed from; the level of Romany language knowledge; the person’s life style. These criteria are available almost for all Romanies. In case that Romany assumes the Romany identity but some elements are lacking he is isolated from the community. The clan – the most important identity criterion - represents Romany’s prestige source. Romanies pay a great attention to family’s prestige, because it could be handed down from generation to generation, from one member to another. The cloths and the language constitute the exterior signs of the person who hold and respect the traditions. The Romany language is the main mean of communication used by Romanies in different life situations. Besides Romany language they speak and use, depending on the context Russian and Romanian languages. The trade has to bring benefits and be practiced far from home. Romany’s mobility is highly appreciated by Romany community. This mobility ensures the person with large social relations. Their activity implies a high risk rate (the benefits aren’t constant), but they bring high benefits. It is very important for them to be independent and use their resources according their will in obtaining new benefits. Romanies solve their problems within their community, they don’t relate to authorities. Due to this they have an informal economy and their dependence on social institutions is minimal. They declare to be orthodox even if visit the church just in need or during the holidays.
