Rezumat

The General Agricultural Census (GAC) is a comprehensive statistical survey in the field of agriculture and rural development, conducted every ten years, which includes all agricultural holdings that use land and / or animals at the national level. After 1990, two rounds of general agricultural census were organized in Romania, in the period 2002-2003, respectively in 2010. The aim of the GAC-round 2020 is to provide quality statistics for the agricultural policies, as well as for the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy and future reforms implemented at European level, as well as for access of farmers to European no reimbursable funds for agriculture and rural development. The purpose of this monographic paper is to present the main legislative, methodological and technical aspects regarding the management of the RGA-round 2020, from the perspective of the practitioner in the field of official statistics. In addition to data regarding the structure and the use of agricultural land, animal and vegetable production, the General Agricultural Census-round 2020 will answer to the following questions: who will do agriculture in the future given the structure by age groups of farmers; how many women still work in agriculture; is there an increase in the share of organic farming; how does agriculture influence the environment; how production methods have evolved? The novelty regarding the General Agricultural Census-round 2020 is the fact that the statistical operators will collect the data based on Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) using electronic tablets. This digital method is significantly reducing the period of processing, analysis, validation and dissemination of statistical data compared to the rounds of previous agricultural censuses. From this point of view, The General Agricultural Census is an historical one of the Romanian official statistical research, in the 162 years of the National Institute of Statistics’ functioning (1859-2021).
