Background. Suddenly installed bilateral sensorineural deafness is a rare form in children and a major problem in otorhinolaryngology, representing a medical emergency, the early establishment of treatment being essential in hearing recovery. Objective of the study. Presentation of a clinical case of bilateral sensorineural deafness suddenly installed in a child of 2 years and 10 months. Material and Methods. Anamnesis, clinical and paraclinical data were taken from the medical databases. The patient was investigated by audiological investigations, namely the audiological assessment and the auditory evoked potential, then the imaging examination was performed. The literature about similar cases has been studied. Results. A 2-year-and-10-months child, was hospitalized in the hospital “Emilian Coțaga” with accusations of hearing loss. Following the clinical and audiological examination, was established the diagnosis of sudden bilateral hearing loss. To initiate treatment as early possible, myringotomy and revision of the tympanic cavity were performed. After the intervention, some pathological content was not detected, and was performed the transtimpanal corticotherapy with Dexamethasone solution 0.4%-0.3ml. The result of the imaging investigation, showed the caudal hernia of the cerebellum by foramen magnum (~11 mm), a characteristic sign of the Arnold-Chiari anomaly. Conclusion. Being a symptom in a complex disease, it is important that the suddenly installed deafness is approached multidisciplinary, and the initiation of treatment is as early possible for the subsequent recovery of hearing. |
