Background. Considering the high burden of TB in our country, a calcifying lung nodule on a chest X ray or chest CT is traditionally interpreted as a TB sequela. In reality calcium accumulation in the lung parenchyma or mediastinal lymph nodes could suggest a wide spectrum of noninfectious diseases. Objective of the study. To demonstrate non-tuberculous causes of pulmonary calcifying nodules. Material and Methods. We present 3 clinical cases that have in common pulmonary calcifying nodules. All patients were identified following a routine chest x ray. None of them had a history of TB, with negative Mantoux and Quantiferon test. Results. 1st case presents pulmonary nodules with peribronchovascular distribution with upper lobe predominance and lymph node calcifications in a morphologically confirmed sarcoidosis. 2nd case presents well defined pulmonary nodules, some of them with calcification, with a highly suggestive sign – pleural plaques and a history of chronic inhalation of silica dust (worker in a glass factory for 15 years). 3rd case – an elderly patient with suggestive signs of dendriform pulmonary ossification predominantly subpleural in a field of extensive lung fibrosis. Conclusion. These cases illustrate that, although found more seldom, calcifying pulmonary nodules of non-tuberculous origin must be carefully interpreted in a clinical (symptoms, history of exposure, previous radiological images), and in an imaging context (suggestive imaging signs). |
