Background. Injection drug users (IDUs) are among of the high risk to be screened for TB annually in the Republic of Moldova. It is due to their features which maintain them to be hard-to-reach for detection, treatment and follow up. Objective of the study. The aim was to assess the features of injection drug users diagnosed with tuberculosis. Material and Methods. It was done a restrospective and longitudinal study of 48 IDUs diagnosed with TB during the period 2012-2019. Results. The distribution of the patients according to sex male/female ratio=7/1, aged <45 y. were 47(98%) and >45 y. 1 (2%) case. Economically unemployed were 43(90%) and disease disabled 5 (10%). Had no health insurance 40(83%), homeless were 8(17%), history of detention had 29(16%), close TB contact had 15(31%), HIV 21(43%), chronic alcoholism 11(6%), viral hepatitis 2(4%), schizophrenia in 1(2%). By active screening were detected 9(19%) and by passive detection 39(81%). Pulmonary TB was diagnosed in 37(77%), disseminated 7(15%), extrapulmonary TB in 4(8%) cases. Successfully treated were 21(44%, lost to follow-up 10(21%), died 8(17%) and were continuing 8(17%) cases. Conclusion. IDUs diagnosed with TB were most frequenlty men, young aged (<45 y.o.), unemployed and uninsured. The peculiarities with epidemiological risk were TB contact, detention history and homelessness. The most common comorbidity was HIV infection and cured was every 2nd patient. |
