The results of a breeding project using foreign hybrids of maize with closed pedigree as initial material for inbred lines development are presented in this article. The identification of 22 inbreds originated from 5 single cross hybrids demonstrated the presence of useful donors for improvement of agronomical important traits, including combining ability. Three sister lines were high yielding in crosses with a tester from Lancaster heterotic group and may be used for the next circle of improvement in Reid Iodent germplasm. Some related lines from Lancaster germplasm group were the best for grain yield in crosses with testers from Reid Iodent heterotic group. It is concluded that mixed germplasm of foreign hybrids of maize can be useful for inbred lines development in cases of new, distinct heterotic patern. |
