Digitalis ferruginea (Rusty foxglove), is a herbaceous species in the genus Digitalis (Scophulariaceae family) native to southern and southeast Europe (Hungary, Romania, Turkey and the Caucasus). D. ferruginea is a perennial herb with a short woody rhizome. Stems are straight, sparsely hairy in the lower part, glabrous in the upper part. Leaves are oblong-lanceolate: basal and lower stem leaves at the base are extended into a petiole and below with pronounced arcuate, pubescent veins. The middle and upper stem leaves are sessile, glabrous, gradually turning into bracts. The bell-shaped, yellowbrown flowers are arranged in a multi-flowered dense raceme. The fruit are ovate glabrous capsule with numerous yellow-brown seeds. The plant contains cardenolides, phenylethanoid glycosides, iridoids, steroidal compounds, nitrogen-containing compounds, phenol carboxylic acids and their derivatives, flavonoids, anthraquinones [1, 2, 6, 7]. The leaves are cardiac, stimulant and tonic [3]. They are often used in the treatment of certain heart complaints. Recent studies have shown that the extracts of D. ferruginea are rich in phenolic, flavonoid and tannin content with promising biological effects. The tested extracts have revealed good antioxidant and toxic activity being considered an alternative source of antioxidant and toxic agents for pharmacological applications [4, 5]. D. ferruginea has also economical relevance because of their ornamental value being cultivated worldwide as garden herb due to its spectacular inflorescences. |
