Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is one of the representative species of forest ecosystems in Moldova, located at the eastern limit of the natural distribution area. Under the impact of current environmental changes, including climate change, the species may lose area and productivity/vitality. Through Beech Tolerance Climate Index (QBTI) identified that during the growing season, the climatic parameters in the region show optimal/favorable conditions for beech growth and development on small areas, direct competitors of beech being tolerant species to arid conditions. It was observed that the value of QBTI in the areas occupied by beech is higher than in the rest of the territory and varies in the limits of 14.7 - 16.7 (compared to values between 12.9 - 14.6 units specific to the territories occupied by Quercus sp., Fraxinus sp., Carpinus sp. etc.). In the context of future climate change, expressing the vulnerability of beech to climate aridity is quite important for the authorities responsible for the sustainable management of the forest fund. |
