In the last years of the existence of the First Polish Republic, the legal status of the Church was regulated in the adopted Government Act. In the Second Polish Republic, the March Constitution of 1921 was a legal act comparable in the above-mentioned scope to the Constitution of May 3. The Concordat of 1925, which, as an international agreement, shaped for good the relations between Poland and the Holy See, was essential for the proper regulation of the State and Church relations. The result of the concordat was the establishment of a new administrative division of the Catholic Church in Poland, which was so necessary at that time. This legal status of the Church in Poland was questioned, first by the Nazi occupation, and then by the new authorities of the People's Republic of Poland, which unilaterally broke the concordat in 1945. Further relations were getting worse and worse. The agreement of 1950 and the adoption of the July Constitution in 1952 were a great hope for the Church. Unfortunately, these provisions were not respected by the state authorities. Only the socio-political transformations of 1989 led to the resumption of diplomatic relations with the Vatican. In 1993, the text of the Concordat was adopted and ratified five years later. A few months earlier, the Constitution was adopted, which, together with the Concordat, finally regulated the legal status of the Catholic Church in Poland. |
