The chapter covers the main state terror campaigns initiated by the Soviet regime in the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic in the first year of Soviet occupation of Bessarabia (1940-1941) and in the aftermath of the Second World War (1945-1951). The chapter also covers in brief several cases on individual or small group repression after Stalin's death up to late 1980s. It pays a special attention to the categories of the victims, of the methods employed by Soviet state security organs as well as the institutions responsible for the implementation of the state terror operations. The author argues that the postwar famine in Moldavian SSR (1946-1947), which took the life of more than 120,000 persons, can be categorized as another form of state terror. As a borderland area, the specificity of the Soviet state terror in Soviet Moldavia is that the main mass repressive campaigns such as deportations did not have an explicit ethnic component, the share of ethnic Romanians/Moldavians constituting about a half of the total victims. In comparison with other national republics of the Soviet West, like Estonia, Soviet Moldavia did not experience in the late Stalinist period a special state terror campaign targeting specifically the members of the party nomenklatura. |
