The chapter explores the ethnic identity and cultural values of Moldovan youth in a new social reality, i.e., in the Republic of Moldova as an independent state. The sample consisted of 200 students from Chisinau aged from 18 to 25 years (М = 20.5; SD = 1.19). The results showed a positive ethnic identity in Moldovan youth, a positive ethnic self-stereotype, and a positive hetero-stereotype (Russians). A closeness between self-stereotypes and hetero-stereotypes of Russians is also identified, which can be explained through a lasting peaceful coexistence of Moldovans with other ethnic groups in such a multicultural state as the Republic of Moldova. The results on ethnic group preferences of Moldovan youth reveal their high awareness of preferences toward their own group, the Russians and Ukrainians. The research of cultural value orientations of the young Moldovans revealed a high importance of egalitarianism (equity) and mastery, and less important was hierarchy. |
