Background. Eye trauma is an important cause of unilateral visual impairment worldwide and accounts for up to 65% of the total number of injuries recorded in the emergency services. Objective of the study. To describe the epidemiological characteristics, the clinical features and the visual outcomes of ocular trauma in Bălți from 2008 to 2012. Material and Methods. The five year retrospective study includes 88 patients, 88 traumatized eyes. Age, gender, the affected eye, causes, types of ocular trauma, initial visual acuity management and final visual acuity were documented. Results. The number of traumas recorded in men is higher than in women. The largest age group is 45-59 years (23,86%), followed by the ≥ 60 years group (21,59%) and the 15-29 years (20,45 %). 45 patients suffered trauma of the right eye, 43- of the left eye. Open eye injuries were the most common (52 cases, 59,09%). Closed traumas account 22,73%, combustions- 17,05%, and destructive traumas- 1,14%. Conclusion. Eye trauma is one of the main causes of unilateral blindness and has a negative impact on the patient's psychological and socioeconomic status. As a result, it is necessary to inspect the observance of work safety in enterprises and to carry out the eye protection education of the population. |
