Rezumat

France was the first great power to support the union of Bessarabia with Romania. France was the only Great Powers who opened a consulate in the capital of Bessarabia, city of Chisinau, and sent french officers into the territory between the Prut and Dniester. During the Paris Conference of 1919-1920, France supported the recognition of the union of Bessarabia with Romania. Within the Commission for Romanian-Yugoslav Affairs, the French representatives acknowledged the idea that Bessarabia is a Romanian territory from a historical, ethnic point of view. The idea of the Romanian character of Bessarabia was supported by the French geographer Emmanuel de Martonne who visited Bessarabia in 1919. Although during the years 1919-1920, France had some reservations, especially the desire to withdraw Romanian troops from Hungary, French diplomacy signed the Treaty of Paris on October 28, 1920.
