Rezumat

The present article discusses the images of the ancestors of the Gagauz reflected in fiction. The main sources of the study are poetic and works works by writers of Gagauz origin – born in the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. Almost all of these writers are professional historians or philologists. Some of them worked in the field of science or were university teachers. The present study shows that all the writers of Gagauz origin are unanimous in saying that the direct ancestors of the Gagauz are the Oguzes. The Pechenegs and the Cumans appear as less common ancestors. A number of writers, along with Oguzes, Pechenegs, and Cumans, mention the more distant ancestors of the Turkic peoples, which went down in history under the name of the Huns. The point of view on the origin of the Gagauz, reflected in fiction, coincides with the generally accepted hypothesis about the origin of the Gagauz, according to which the Gagauz formed as a result of the interaction in the Balkans of the Turkic-speaking tribes of the Pechenegs, Uz and Polovtsy.
