The finding of vermiform appendix in an inguinal hernia has an incidence of approximately 1%. The condition is given the eponymous nameAmyand’s hernia. The clinical presentation varies, depending on the extent of inflammation of the appendix and is most often misdiagnosed as an incarcerated inguinal henia. As such it is rarely recognised prior to surgical exploration. Our patient – 84-year old man presented with 3 day history with disconfort in the right inguinal region, followed by 24 hours of generalized abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. The treatment consisted of a combination of appendectomy and hernia repair. The postoperatory period was followed by cardio-vascular and respiratory complications and after 6 days the patient died.
