The forest biodiversity provide many ecosystem services, such as protection of plant, water and soil ressources. Forest biodiversity has also important to maintenance of natural ecosystems, contribution to climate stability and social benefits. In forests, biological diversity allows species to adapt to the continuously evolving dynamic environmental conditions, to maintain and improve breeding opportunities for species and to promote ecosystem functions. The long evolution of the primary forest in a relatively stable and undisturbed by human impact environment, biodiversity has been preserved properly. According to FAO estimations, forest area for protection and biodiversity conservation in the last decade has increased by approx. 96 million ha, with an accelerated pace in the last 5 years. These forests represent about 12% of the total area, or 386 million hectares, and are located mostly within national forest parks and protected areas. |
