The study of rare earth carboxylates is an area of continuous interest due
to peculiar physicochemical properties of the various 4f ions and to their use as
essential components in the production of new optical and magnetic materials
[1]. Herein we present the synthesis and single-crystal X-ray study of two
polymeric SmIII and NdIII cyanoacetates with the following composition:
{Sm(CNCH2COO)3(CNCH2COOH)(H2O)5}n (1),
{[Nd(CNCH2COO)3(H2O)2]⋅H2O} (2).
Compounds 1 and 2 were obtained by the reaction of lanthanide salts with
cyanoacetic acid in aqueous solution. Both crystals are built from the coordination
polymeric chains, sustained by polydentate-bridge carboxylate ligands in a large
variety of structural functions. Crystal 1 are monoclinic and crystallizes in P21/c
sp. gr.: a = 8.840(5) Å, b =18.309 (10) Å, c = 12.03(6) Å, β = 94.799(5)o; crystal
2 is triclinic, sp. gr. P 1 with a = 9.020(2)Å, b =9.166(2) Å, c = 9.746(2) Å, β =
83.69(3)o.
