Multă vreme problematica identității sociale a constituit prerogativa psihologilor sociali și a psihosociologilor, care au recurs la abordarea ei prin diverse mijloace științifice, elaborînd teorii bazate pe experimente, statistici și observații sistematizate. Astfel problema identității sociale rămîne a fi un subiect fascinant, inepuizabil și chiar provocator, deoarece fiecare individ care vorbește despre identitate o reconfigurează și o reafirmă. Identitatea socială permite legătura dintre individ şi grup, ea derivă din conştiinţa apartenenţei la unul sau la mai multe grupuri sau categorii sociale. Identificarea individului cu grupul din care face parte se realizează prin interiorizarea normelor şi valorilor in-groupului, datorită omogenității percepţiilor şi uniformității comportamentelor. Putem conchide că identitatea socială se realizează printr-o succesiune de identificări prin intermediul cărora un subiect asimilează, interiorizează un aspect, un atribut al altuia și se transformă total sau parțial după modelul acestuia.

For a long time the problem of social identity has been the prerogative of social psychologists and psychosociologists, who have resorted to approaching them through various scientific means, elaborating theories based on experiments, statistics and systematized observations. Thus the issue of social identity remains a fascinating, inexhaustible and even challenging subject, because every individual who speaks of identity reconfigures and reaffirms it. Social identity allows the connection between the individual and the group, it derives from the consciousness of belonging to one or more groups or social categories. Identifying the individual with the group to which it belongs is accomplished by internalizing the rules and values of the in-group, due to the homogeneity of the perceptions and the uniformity of the behaviors. We can conclude that social identity is accomplished by a sequence of identifications through which a subject assimilates, enters one aspect, one attribute of another, and transforms it entirely or partially according to its pattern.
