Mankind has used the resources of useful minerals to secure livelihood from the beginning of its existence. With the evolution of humanity, their variety and volume have increased, mirroring to some extent the rhythms of economic development of the world's states. The progress of the latter is largely influenced by the presence, research and exploitation of mineral resources. Systematic research of the underground of the Republic of Moldova for the purpose of discovering and estimating the volume of mineral resources was carried out after the Second World War during the period 1945-1975. During the following decades, the entire region was studied, and by 2016 the Agency for Geology and Mineral Resources attached to the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Moldova has notified 493 relatively evenly distributed basins, predominantly in the North and the Center, of which 96 are located within the South Region (which represents 19.47% of the total of the republic).
