Academy of Sciences of Moldova, Institute of Philology, Folklore Summary The presence of the young men in the carols, found on the territory of the left bank of the Dniester River, was one of the most discussed reasons in the folk culture, which is of great interest at the moment in the contemporary folklore. The author of this article aims to elucidate the archaic character of these carols, which are based on the principle of initiation of young men in adulthood. Thus emphasizing and appreciating their inwardness and their decency at the beginning of their marriage, the text gains a heroic character, cumulating the symbols that provide „ancient elements” of myth, equal to those in the carols, folk theater and incantation. According to the records of Constantin Mohanu, we will appreciate the archaic particularities about the lion, the hawk, the stallion and their interaction with the young man. Here we will also refer to the coincidence of a ballad motif with the title „I’m not taking you to be my slave”. |
