The Grand Metropolitan Veniamin Costachi was one of the most venerable hierarchs of the Romanian Orthodox Church. He shepherded the dioceses of Moldova with a rare self-sacrifice for half a century (1792-1842). The great metropolitan had to face many bad troubles, but in spite of them he had numerous outstanding achievements on various fronts such as spiritual, ecclesiastical, cultural, social and patriotic fields. The most remarkable activity the Metropolitan Veniamin Costachi did was that of a translator and a publisher of many patristic and ritual books. In this regard he remains unique in the history of the Moldovan Church. The two publishing houses founded by him at the Neamt Monastery and the Monastery Three Hierarchs in Iasi, barely managed to print the nearly one hundred and fifty titles of original books and translations from Greek and Slavonic, translated by him and the «teachers» at Neamt. Despite the fact that he was the “caretaker” of the whole Diocese of Moldova and Suceava, Metropolitan Veniamin Costachi managed to write seven and translate 32 books of great dogmatic, moral, liturgical, hagiographic and historical importance. I would like to mention, that the collection of old church books of the Department of old and rare books of the National Library of Moldova contains 30 of the most representative books printed in Iasi and at the Neamt monastery, under the care and on the money of Veniamin Costachi for the benefit and enlightenment of people. |
