Smartphones have become a very widespread technological device through which humans can communicate, process, and share information and access the Internet through various attractive mobile applications. Although smartphones can optimize many aspects of daily life, excessive use can lead to health problems, including clinical addiction. To date, several scales have been created both to identify problematic smartphone users and to assess associated psychological and adjustment problems. One of the most used instruments in this research field is the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS) and its short version. This scale has been translated and psychometrically adapted in many countries. The current study aims to test the construct validity and reliability of the SAS-SV Romanian version. Data were collected using an initial sample of 411 Romanian adolescents who were attending different high schools. Using confirmatory factor analysis with AMOS 20.0, two hypothetical measurement models were tested. The metric model with one-latent factor and one pair of intercorrelated errors proved a satisfactory statistical fit. The internal consistency of the 10-item version of SAS-SV was good (αCronbach = 0.839). Girls scored significantly higher than boys on SAS-SV. Compared to adolescents who lived in rural areas, those from urban areas scored significantly higher on SAS-SV. The evidence presented suggests that the SAS-SV is a psychometrically reliable and valid instrument. It can be used to assess the proneness to smartphone addiction. |
