Rezumat

This research is devoted to an actual and unsolved problem of the English Phonetics - English central diphthongs /'iə/, /'εə/, /'ƆƏ/, /'uə/, all being falling. It gives a survey of different view points held by different phoneticians with regard to the manner of articulation, acoustic peculiarities and orthographic problems of English central diphthong /'εə/. This compound sound possesses specific articulatory and acoustic characteristic, which determines its special status within the phonetic and phonological system in the context of language-speech dichotomy. It should be stressed that English central diphthongs, as well as diphthong /'εə/ have no counterparts in the Roumanian, Russian, Gagauzian languages. Consequently, the students that learn English as a foreign language have the tendency to mispronounce this complex sound: First the nuclei of the English diphthong /'εə/- these mistakes consist: replacing the /ε/ sound by different vowel sounds and not observing the proper length of the nucleus, of pronouncing the diphthong without accent on its nuclei, in monophthongizing the sounds /ε/ or /e/, especially before the sound /r/.Second the glide - these mistakes consist: of dropping the glide and replacing the diphthong by a monophong, of replacing the glides by other sounds. The authors suggest some strategies that can be used in order to facilitate the quality of teaching and learning the English central diphthong [ ׳εƏ], as well as a set of phonetic exercises-drills.
