Background. Palmoplantar dermatitis (PPD) represents a group of heterogenous skin conditions with diverse ethyology, recurrent evolution and major impact on patient’s quality of life, manifesting through the inflammatory skin lesions and diagnosed via histological exam. Objective of the study. Aim of the present study is to evaluate epidemiological, clinical and histopathological aspects of palmoplantar dermatitis. Material and Methods. The systematic literature review with meta-analysis of the published results has been done. A descriptive and retrospective evaluation of histopathologically confirmed palmoplantar dermatitis was also being made. Results. Reviewers have identified 12 articles based on systematic approach, results of 4 underwent a meta-analysis which shown that certain histopathological patterns have a strong impact upon diagnosis of palmoplantar dermatitis. Proper study has included 22 people with PPD majority of whom were farmers between 31-60 years of age, with positive family history and exposed to different topical irritants. Main clinical forms included palmoplantar pustulosis, pompholyx and hyperkeratotic eczema. Major histopathological processes encompassing aspongiotic vesicles, spongiosis as well as inflammatory cellular component. Conclusion. Researchers has identified a strong correlation between clinical forms of PPD and histopathological processes identified microscopically. However, the real impact of evaluated phenomena can be demonstrated only through the analytical studies. |
