Background. Fahr syndrome is a neurodegenerative disease which is characterized by the calcification of divers brain regions. Due to the damage of several brain areas, the disease manifests clinical polymorphism mimicking various mental disorders, which is why it is often diagnosed late. Objective of the study. To study, based on the literature resources, the clinical and evolutive features of the Fahr disease. Material and Methods. We analyzed 45 literature sources, published in the last decade, in order to highlight the clinical-therapeutic features of Fahr’s Disease. Results. The disease can have a very polymorphic clinical picture, which varies from neurological disorders (gait disturbance, inability to articulate words, stiffness of the hands, blindness), to mental disorders (depression, anxiety, psychosis) or even delirium superimposed on dementia. Conclusion. Fahr disease can create diagnostic difficulties and is often confused with other mental health disorders. Early diagnosis and the appropriate treatment of this category of patients can increase both their life expectancy and quality of life. |
