Background. The chorda tympani nerve is a derivative of the VIIth pair of cranial nerves that develops from the facio-acoustic primordium. It passes through a bony canaliculus and in case of inflammation, a compression of the chorda tympani nerve occurs, resulting in its impairments. Objective of the study: Investigation of the peculiarities of the chorda tympani nerve and its canaliculus development. Material and Methods. The study was carried out on 49 series of sagittal, frontal and transverse cross-sections of human embryos and fetuses, with parietosacral length (PSL) from 6 mm to 70 mm, on the base of the embryological collection of the Department of normal anatomy of the Belarusian State Medical University from Minsk. Results. At the end of Carnegie stage 14, beginning of stage 15 from the geniculate ganglion the chorda tympani nerve derived. It run between the auditory ossicles forming a sharp angle with the facial nerve trunk. When PSL of the fetus reached 32 mm, an obvious space between the walls of the chorda tympani canaliculus and chorda tympani nerve fibers was distinguished. Exiting its canaliculus the chorda tympani nerve entered the tympanic cavity within which it formed connections with the tympanic plexus. Conclusion. One of the earliest branches of the intermediate nerve (Wrisberg) is chorda tympani nerve having its origin from the geniculate ganglion. At 32 mm PSL of the fetus the chorda tympani canaliculus is clearly distinguished. |
