The Commission of Historical Monuments of Bessarabia, a dynamic institution, active despite all the difficulties that were in the interwar decades had an essential contribution in protecting the cultural heritage, passing on to future generations the inherited cultural wealth. Created in 1918, it actually began its activity only after the publication of the decree of October 1919, in which the members of the Commission were nominated and its president was named Paul Gore. Gradually becoming the most important cultural institution, overseen by the Commission of Historical Monuments in Bucharest, both with the same goal of protecting heritage, gained the trust of scientists and culture, passionate teachers of our historical past, aware that without heritage a people may lose their cultural identity. It was an institution that worked very well in particular and changed the attitude of civil society.”
