The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of esophageal manometry in the diagnosis of (GERD) and achalasia in children. The study group had 17 patients aged 4 to 17 years evaluated using esophageal manometry for dyspeptic symptoms and dysphagia. The patients with GERD (n=11) with fi rst grade refl ux esophagitis had values of the LES pressure with an average ±SD=23,82±10,67 mmHg. For this parameter, in the patients with second grade refl ux esophagitis we recorded values with the average ±SD of 22,12±7,05 mmHg. The value of the LES pressure in patients with achalasia (n=3) was ranged 58-70 mmHg and the relaxation of the LES was incomplete in this category of children. The manometric evaluation of the esophagus revealed hypotonic LES in the majority of the children with GERD. The value of the LES pressure did’t depend on the grade of the refl ux esophagitis or the pH of the gastric content. The main manometrical change found in patients with achalasia was the incomplete relaxation of the LES after wet swallows. The normal esophageal peristalsis in the patients with achalasia suggests early stages of achalasia. |
