A valuable historical source that contains information about the water and land transport means in Moldova in the middle of 17th century is the Journal of Travelling in the Romanian Countries (1653-1658) signed by the orthodox archdeacon Paul of Aleppo (Syria). This study analyses testimonies describing navigation on inland and border rivers, some types of boats and bridges, as well as animal traction vehicles for dry roads and snow covered roads. At the same time, there are examined the news about the activity of the transport service (menzil - a post situated on the road), about organizing the travel of foreign delegations on the territory of Moldova and about ensuring their security. |
