Rezumat

A challenge of modernization and Europeanization in the area of public administration is related to the gender issues. Women are under-represented at positions where key decisions are made on various aspects of economic and social life, and this aspect is easily observed in public administration. Even if both European and national legislation prohibits gender discrimination, stereotypes and prejudices continue to exist, and they even dictate when the selection is based on the vote. One of the prerequisites of this situation is the delimitation of public space by the private one and the consideration of the two types of spaces with characteristics that come from gender area, where public space is traditionally invested with attributes of masculine performance, while the private one is a sphere of femininity, the woman being the one who traditionally cares for the family and the house. Valuing leadership and specific masculine values has brought stereotypes: women are being viewed as less qualified and capable then their male counterparts, they do not have the skills, they are not appropriate and so on. An illustration of this state of affairs is the present distribution of chairs in the local councils of the largest cities from Romania, as well as committees where the women councilor were invested to work based on traditional culture, drawing some conclusions on the political culture in public administration and some possible recommendations of good practices in the area.
