Careful explorer of the social and political events, Eugene Ionesco was preoccupied with the metaphysical aspect of the human condition, aware of the fact that no society has been able to resolve the existential problem of the human being. The current article has the main purpose to point out, from the Victims of duty comedy, aspects from the Ionesco vision upon the individual, considered as the root of the evil: the individual became victim of the social duty, but also of the own vanity of being superior to the humanity. The comedy is the expression of these reflections, it is a question about life and, mostly, about the author’s life, influenced by the parents, by the wife, by the daughter and by his concerns as a creator. According to the author, in the society, everyone has a social mission well determined, and the marionette-character has to respect some specific laws, reflecting the precisely image of that reality. Therefore, the individual cannot escape to the duties, duties to which is subjected the entire humanity, material duties, which is useless and in vain trying to escape them. In these conditions, the violence and the aggression hidden in the humans manifest themselves at all levels, because, as C.G Jung stated, “No one can escape the human condition” 1 and, tragically, the dominator will end up to be, in his turn, the dominated. |
