This paper discusses the ethical principles that the media should apply in a multicultural society. The controversial French satirical publication Charlie Hebdo has been in the centre of one of the most dramatic European scenes of cultural violence since 2006. That year, following the publication of a handful of cartoons in the Danish local newspaper Jyllands Posten, there have been a series of violent protests in the Muslim world that ended with the death of over one hundred people. The terrorist attack of 2014 on the French publication which ended with twelve deaths raised one again the issue of freedom of the press. On the one hand, journalists claim that the freedom of speech is one of the most treasured democratic values. On the other hand, there is the question of the ethical responsibility of the media to mediate between different cultures, along with the interdiction to be one of the actors implicated in a particular cultural war. In other words, freedom comes with responsibility. Another consequence of the attack was the gaping between those who identified with the satirical attitude of Charlie and those who did not. On the social media, it became imperative to take sides and state a position. This gaping is not without consequences upon the understanding of the European values in general and of the media ethical values in a multicultural society, in particular. These are the values that the paper shall discuss. |
