In classical Turkish literature, the reduction of a date with an abjad calculation to commemorate an important event has become a sign of art. These chronograms were written for occasions such as enthronements, weddings, circumcisions, conquests, preferences, death, important natural events and disasters, patronage activities, the addition or completion of a work, important political events of the time, reciting the Qur'an, new year greetings etc., and are found in the divan of many poets. The eighteenth-century poet Dürrî Ahmed was also quite skilful in the art of chronogram, and biographical sources of the period speak highly of his success in this field. The poet, who was Ahmet III's servant, not only wrote odes to the Sultan in his divan, but also wrote chronograms for him on many occasions. He praises his patron with beautiful adjectives in his histories written for reasons such as the sultan's recovery from smallpox, his beard, his tughra, the birth, circumcision and weddings of princes and queens, the architectural works and naval vessels he built, gratitude for the posts he obtained, and a request for help due to his dismissal. One of the chronograms he wrote is a chronogram of teething that has not yet been seen in classical Turkish poetry. In this verse, which was sung when Fatima Sultan, daughter of Ahmet III, had her first tooth when she was six months old, the poet praised the sultan at length and dated this important event. In this paper, the mentioned poem will be analyzed and the issues that make it exceptional will be emphasized. |
