Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic, progressive arthritis among patients with psoriasis, which can result in permanent and disabling joint damage. Although previously considered a relatively benign disease, research over the past twenty years has significantly altered this perception. It is currently known to be an inflammatory systemic disease with medical consequences beyond joint function, such as cardiovascular disease and similar results as in rheumatoid arthritis including the prevalence of erosions and joint destruction at the same time. Psoriatic arthritis remains underdiagnosed. Early identification of psoriatic arthritis is important for improving long-term outcomes.
