Rezumat

The present study aims to address the role of the personality of Elena Alistar in the history of Romanians in the interwar period from the perspective of the modernization of Romanian society.A prominent representative of the Union generation, the first female politician in the Romanian area, Elena Alistar, versatile personality, active in many fields and publishing articles and memoirs, supporting any meritorious initiative in the field of education and culture, bringing great services to the education system of interwar Bessarabia, being a promoter of the feminist movement, through all her activity she contributed to the development of the European spirit in the country. The analysis of her publications in the newspapers of that time, the considerations of her contemporaries, taking into account the echoes, which have survived to this day, helps us to build the profile of Elena Alistar, elucidating her prodigious activity as a politician, pedagogue, always at the service of the country and its people. If, as the academician Ioan-Aurel Pop expressed, "the great lessons about the need to orient Romanians towards Europe came from Moldovan intellectuals and politicians", then Elena Alistar's voice and activity represent a confirmation of this finding. The data of the study demonstrate that both her engagement in political life, becoming a deputy in the supreme legislative body of Bessarabia "Sfatul Țării", as well as her active involvement in the field of education, in the feminist movement, as well as in other dimensions, contributed to the affirmation of the European spirit in the Romanian space of that time, through the processes of liberalization and democratization of society.
