Rezumat

Taking into account the prolonged transition and the economic, social and political crises that marked the Romanian society, after 1989 the migration to other countries in order to find a job was an inherent phenomenon. A big number of families needed to find new ways to adapt to the new social and economic configuration of the post-revolutionary Romanian society. The economical difficulties encountered, the stress of survival and the takeover of the European model of the family, social and economic mobility have made, in the recent years, more and more families to choose to move abroad, aiming to search for more advantageous working and living conditions. In Romania, as in other countries from the Eastern or South-Eastern Europe, the phenomenon of migration of young people and adults in order to find a new job took an obvious magnitude, especially after 1995-1996. Despite the benefits it brought (for eg.: the infusion of the financial capital into the country, which stimulated the consumer market and, through this mechanism, the production of goods and services or the openness of the romanian people towards the Western cultures, which allowed some to broaden their intellectual horizons), this phenomenon started to show its negative effects at the family level, at the local communities from where the emigrants had left, as well as at the level of the Romanian society as a whole. Probably, the most painful facet, which has long-term economic, social and cultural implications, is represented by both the negative life experiences that are faced by tens of thousands of children and young people that were left in their country in the care of a single parent or even a different person (older brothers, grandparents or other relatives) and the unpleasant experiences of those who are returning permanently to the country. The social functions of the families have been affected to a greater or lesser extent, because the disturbances that manifest in one function find resonance in the others as well. All these changes are related to the cultural and civilization changes of the society.
