Traumatic injuries ranks second in the structure of the overall incidence of morbidity in the Republic of Moldova. Over the last few years about 60% of trauma incidents have occurred due to minor accidents such as a simple fall on the ground. It is believed that the main cause of trauma, in elderly people, might be the presence of osteoporosis. For senior persons, the cause of trauma could be the fragility of bones. Since one of the main causes of osteoporosis is the poor and unbalanced diet, that is why we aimed to study the eating behavior of patients from the trauma unit. We have used questionnaires to gathered data from 120 patients from Traumatology unit nr.2 of the Institute Emergency Medicine from Chisinau municipality, Republic of Moldova. The subjects were to answer questions about their eating behavior and food consumption. The patients, male and female, answered voluntary, they aged between 25 and 60 years old. The gathered data revealed that many patients, before being hospitalized, had a deficient nutrition and were not eating at least 3 times a day as it is recommended. The data also revealed that 25% of subject never had breakfast before being hospitalized. The data also showed that only 54,2% of subjects were eating breakfast on a daily basis and 20,8% were not having breakfast on a regular basis. About 44% of persons ignored lunch, while dinner was ignored by only 4,1% of the questioned patients. In the first half of the day 53% of patients had snacks and between dinner and supper 54% of those questioned. It should be noted that before going to sleep 30% of the respondents served a snack. Of those surveyed daily, 22,5% consumed dairy products, and 76,6% of the patients indicated they consume these products only 1-2 times a week. In the daily diet, meat is present at 58,3%, while the rest of the patients consume it 1-4 times per week. At the same time, the various sausages are consumed daily by the absolute majority (95%) of those questioned. Fresh vegetables are missing in daily nutrition in 49% of patients and 35% in fruit. Sweets are preferred by 66,6% of surveyed patients who claim to consume them daily. Excessive sweat consumption by 2/3 respondents may influence calcium bio-availability. The results of the assessment revealed that patients have unhealthy eating behavior. It was found that the patients’ daily diets were poor in foods that are good sources of calcium and phosphorus.
