On May 14, 2023, the second round of elections for the bashkan position of Gagauzia took place, in which Evgenia Guțul, candidate of the Shor Party confronted Grigori Uzun, supported by the SPRM. Following the counting of validly cast votes, the Central Electoral Commission found that the elections were won by Evgenia Guțul. The coming to power in Gagauzia of a pro-Russian bashkan, supported by a party hostile to Chisinau, caused the tension of the relations between the Comrat and the Moldovan authorities and generated a strong separatist rhetoric, which could have serious consequences on the stability of the country, serving the interests of Russia, in the context in which it triggered an extensive hybrid war to destabilize the political situation in the Republic of Moldova. According to the legislation in force, the bashkan of Gagauzia becomes ex officio a full member of the Government, following a decree signed by the President of the Republic of Moldova, quality in which he participates at the meetings of the Executive. Although since the election of the new bashkan (14 May 2023) and its investiture (19 July 2023) more than 9 and 7 months have passed, respectively, president Maia Sandu did not sign the decree of appointment. This tense situation between the new bashkan and the leadership of the Republic of Moldova has as main cause the belonging of Evgenia Guțul to a ,,criminal group”, led by the fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor, something publicly recognized by President Maia Sandu. |
