As an important component of the world economy, trade in services has had a remarkable evolution lately, continuing to support the economic progress in the foreseeable future. In the first part of the paper, aspects related to the factors that led to the growth of international trade in services are highlighted, such as: the servicing of the economies with the increase of services in GDP, the development and implementation of technologies, mainly IT, the liberalization of markets by opening them to international service partners, the increase of the participation of services in global value chains, developing the international regulatory framework favourable to international trade in services. However, services trade flows continue to be vulnerable to the global economic situation, which has been considerably affected by the pandemic, recent regional conflicts and worsening macroeconomic conditions in most countries of the world. The prospects of trade in services will be influenced by favourable market forces, as well as by the intensification of digitization, trade in services provided by digital means, experiencing a spectacular evolution in recent years, including during the pandemic. Romania fits into the general picture of developments in international trade in services. The case study proposed in the paper includes an analysis of the main coordinates of trade in services in Romania, from which it is obvious that both the determining factors and the perspectives follow the European trends in the growth of trade in services. Romania is an attractive market for business models in services, with a high level of education, which supports trade in services, such as professional or IT services. The conclusion of this analysis is that, despite some recent adverse conjunctural factors, trade in services will intensify, mainly due to the extent of digitalization that makes the remote delivery of many services possible, and the development of environmental services will support global climate goals. |
