The essential role in the defense of the Danube limes fell to the land forces. Their disposition in the Romano-Byzantine provinces of the Lower Danube can be found in the military document Notitia Dignitatum. According to this source, 27 land military units were stationed in Dacia Ripensis, of which nine were cavalry and 18 were infantry. Their forces amounted to 11,500 warriors, of which 4,500 horsemen and 7,000 infantrymen. In the province of Moesia Secunda, a number of 21 land military units were deployed, of which seven cavalry and 14 infantry (without the three in Rhodope and Thrace). Their numbers amounted to 9,500 soldiers, of which 3,500 horsemen and 6,000 infantrymen. A total of 19 military units were deployed in Scythia Minor, of which seven cavalry and 13 infantry. The military forces in their composition amounted to 9,000 warriors, of which 3,500 horsemen and 5,500 infantrymen. Of these, four military units were stationed in the bridgeheads located on the left bank of the Lower Danube, at Sucidava, Drobeta și Zernis (Dierna), of which one were cavalry and three were infantry. In total, they numbered 1450 people, of which 500 horsemen and 950 infantrymen. A number of 68 ground military units, of which 23 cavalry and 45 infantry were deployed in the area of jurisdiction of the three Lower Danube provinces. Their numbers amounted to 30,000 warriors, of which 11,500 horsemen and 18,500 infantrymen. This number does not include troops stationed in the Rhodopes and Thrace. |
