Chronic heart failure is a syndrome with high prevalence, associated with an important risk of morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of heart failure in the general population is 1-2% and increases with age. Atrial fibrillation is the most frequent sustained cardiac arrhythmia encountered in the clinical practice, with a prevalence of 2-4% in the general population. Heart failure and atrial fibrillation frequently coexist. The management of patients with these comorbidities should include identification and treatment of precipitant factors for atrial fibrillation (hyperthyroidism, uncontrolled arterial hypertension, infections, electrolytic disorders etc), treatment of heart failure, prevention of thromboembolic events, control of heart rate and rhythm. The heart failure treatment is done according to the type of heart failure: with reduced or preserved ejection fraction. Screening and treatment of cardiovascular and noncardiovascular comorbidities is recommended in all patients with heart failure. |
