Dyshomeostasis induced by alcohol in experimental hemorrhagic shock
Morbidity and mortality following traumatic injury and hemorrhagic shock are exacerbated in the alcohol-intoxicated individual. The impact of alcohol intoxication on the immediate pathophysiologic response to injury has not been closely examined. The present results provide concrete evidence for multifactorial effects of acute alcohol intoxication on the counterregulatory response to hemorrhagic shock. These results show hemodynamic, metabolic, and inflammatory effects of acute alcohol intake associated with hemorrhagic shock. Taken together, these alterations in metabolic and inflammatory responses to hemorrhage are likely to impair immediate outcome and predispose to tissue injury. |
